Introduction

In this assignment you will working together to construct wiki entries on topics related to our use of energy. Groups will be expected to present the content of their wiki during next week's class.

Once the topics are open, please stake your claim by inserting your names at the top of the main page for the topic. Once you are into the page, check out the discussion page for your topic. I have posted some things on each topic's discussion page to get you started.

Content and Referencing:

  • Wikipedia is an excellent place to begin doing the literature research on your topic. Each of the topics selected for this project have excellent Wikipedia entries, so I encourage you to start your reference search there.
  • The textbook has limited coverage of most of these topics, so I do not expect you will be using the book much in this project.
  • The New Scientist Energy and Fuels Topic Guide is an excellent source of information; click here for the link.
  • Please include a "References Cited" section at the bottom of your wiki entry. Please follow APA guidelines for references and citations; a quick guide to APA style can be found at APA Style Essentials.

Style

  • Wiki entries are as much visual as they are text-driven, so spend some time making them visually appealing.
  • For those of you new to wikis, please use the following resources to work on your technique:
  • When constructing your page, please remember to place the following information prominently at the top of your page: Names of collaborative creators (first name and last initial) and ISCI 2001.
  • Be bold, be daring...embed an topically appropriate video in your wiki. Video embedding instructions.
  • Wikis are just like website in many, many ways, including images. To view an image on your wiki, you will need to follow these steps...
  1. Locate an appropriate image file
  2. Download (save) the file to your computer.
  3. After clicking over to "Edit" the page, click on the "Embedded file" tool in the tool bar (looks like a picture). You will then see something like this: [[Image:Example.jpg]] in your editing window.
  4. Save the page and then click on [[Image:Example.jpg]]
  5. Then upload the image to the wiki
  6. Voila! You should now have an image on your wiki!

Requirements

Please make sure to include the following elements in your entry:

  1. A list of vocabulary terms at the bottom of your page.
  2. Please bold all vocabulary words/key terms in the body of your wiki entry, making sure to include definitions in the body of your answers.
  3. Provide 1-2 short answer questions, which help to focus students on the important issues your are presenting in your entry.
  4. Make sure to include all of the requested items (varies from page to page, consult the specifics on your discussion page).
  5. Provide links to relevant lesson plans and other classroom materials that would be appropriate to use in your K-8 classrooms.

In-Class Presentation

We will be using the Each One, Teach One (EOTO) model for presentations. Each group member is responsible for delivering all of the content from their wiki to a small group of students (who worked on the other entries). To accomplish this effectively, each group needs to produce a script that all members will present from. You will also be using the wiki entry as a visual aid during your individual presentation. Presentations should be 5-7 minutes in length (including time for students to take notes).
